9:45 am
with a very low pressure system that is combining to coke and make this a really intense storm. the result of all of this is you have a lot of closures along the east coast, including wall street which is completely shut down, no trading of any kind on the markets. it looks like that will be true as well for tomorrow. because of this, there are a number of u.s. companies that are postponing their quarterly reports. the last time the stock exchange was closed down this way was september 11, 2001, and last closed for a weather-related event back in 1985 for hurricane gloria. it is expected that it will be closed tomorrow as well, the new york stock exchange, which makes it the first-ever consecutive weather-related closings since 1888. back then, a blizzard left dress of snow as high as 40 feet and shut down exchange for a couple of days. mass transit, the lifeblood for
9:46 am
both washington d.c. and new york are shut down. that means everybody is at home pretty much. thousands of flights have been canceled up and down the eastern seaboard. that has affected air travel worldwide, to rueurope and to asia. folks could be stranded at the airport for days. we're watching this very closely. our fox news senior correspondent is out there in the thick of it in point pleasant, new jersey. rick, how was it going? >> i just recorded a wind gust of 47.2 miles per hour. the wind is steady between 35 m.p.h. and 40 miles per hour here in point pleasant, which is right on the atlantic ocean. it has been evacuated, with mandatory evacuation orders up and down the new jersey coastline. as we can tell, most people have heeded the warning, which is a very good thing because conditions are getting worse by the hour. the surf is very rough.
9:47 am
we are at low tide ran out and there are many roads flooded, not just in point pleasant, but in atlantic city, new jersey. >> the president has enter the brady briefing room. >> response teams, including brief a at -- including fema and agencies that will be helping with the recovery efforts, the department of energy, the department of transportation, the department of homeland security, and the department of health and human services. everyone is a bear -- everyone is aware that this will be big and powerful storm. across the eastern seaboard, everyone is taking a corporate preparations. i have spoken to all of the governors in all of these states. they have issued emergency declarations. those have been turned around quickly here in the white house. we have been three position assets so that fema personnel are working closely with state and local governments. we're making sure that food and
9:48 am
water and emergency generation is available for those communities that will be hardest hit. we anticipate that the center of the storm will hit landfall sometime this evening. but because of the nature of the storm, we're certain that this will be a slow-moving process through a wide swath of the country. and millions of people will be affected. the most important message that i have for the public right now is pleased listen to what your state and local officials are saying. when they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate. do not delay. don't pause. don't question. -- don't question the instructions that are being given because this is a serious storm and could have potentially fatal consequences if people do not act quickly. the good news is that the governors and local officials, i think, have had a few days of
9:49 am
preparation. there has been extraordinarily close coordination between state, federal and local governments. so we're confident that the assets are prepositioned for the effectiveness in response to this storm. keep in mind, for folks were not following instructions, if you are not evacuate when you have been asked to evacuate, you are putting first responders in danger. we will have to have search and rescue teams in and around multiple states all of the same time. although we have the coast guard and department of defense all positions, if the public is not following instructions, that make it more dangerous for people and it means that we could have fatalities that could have been avoided. transportation will be tied up for a long time. and probably the most of negative impact for la people, in addition to flooding, will be getting -- for a lot of people, in addition to flooding, will be getting power running.
9:50 am
despite the fact that the power companies are working very closely with their various state officials and local officials to make sure that they are bringing in as many access as possible and getting those ready in preparation for the storm, the fact is that a lot of these emergency crews will not be able to get into position to start restoring power until some of the wind has died down. and because the nature of this storm, that may take several days. so the public should anticipate that there will be a lot of power outages and it may take time for that power to get back on. the same is true transportation. there will be allowed back logs. even after the storm has cleared, it will take considerable amount of time for airlines, subways, trains, and so forth to potentially get back on the amount of damage that has occurred. let me summarize just by saying
9:51 am
that i am extraordinarily grateful for the cooperation of our state and local officials. the conversations i have had with all of the governor's indicate that, at this point, there are no unmet need. but they give it is taking this very seriously. we have prepositioned all the resources that we need. but right now, the key thing is to make sure the public is following directions. for those of you need additional information on how to respond, you can go to ready.gov. that would set should provide you with all of the information that your family needs in terms of how you can prepare for this storm. our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the people who are potentially affected. we are extraordinarily grateful for our first responders because they will be working around the clock nonstop. and one to make sure that -- the
9:52 am
last point i will make, this will be a big storm. it will be a difficult storm. the great thing about america is that, when we go through tough times like this, we all pull together. we look out for friends. we look for our -- we look out for our neighbors. we set aside are issues that we may have to make sure we respond appropriately and with swiftness. and that is exactly what i anticipate will happen here. so i want to thank all of the federal teams, state teams and local teams in place. i am confident that we are ready. i think the public needs to prepare for the fact that this will take some time for this cleanup. of course, we will clean up and we will get through this. >> on the election, sir? >> i am not worried at this point about the impact on the election. i am worried on -- i am worried about the impact on families and on their first responders.
9:53 am
i am worried about the impact on our economy and on transportation. the election will take care of itself next week. right now, our number one priority is to make sure that we are saving lives, that our search and rescue teams will be in place, that people get the food, the water, the show to the meeting case of emergency. and that we respond as quickly as possible to get the economy back on track. >> that is a long time. >> a kind of a -- >> president obama pausing to just take one question at the end of that briefing, saying that the election will take a back seat right now. he is mostly concerned about the well-being of american families and the first responders who will be out in force in reaction to hurricane sandy. he said the election will take care of itself next week. but he did warn americans that come over the course of the next several days, they may find themselves in some pretty tough situations. very likely without power over a large swath of the east coast,
9:54 am
from virginia to massachusetts. he said you really need to heed the warnings of your local governors. if they tell you to evacuate them the need to listen to what they are saying. he said to go to ready.gov and do what you can to prepare your home. i think that most people have gotten batteries and water and supplies that they have in their home for this event as we gary for the impact of this. it looks like, over the next several hours, the wind and the water and the rain will start to intensify. storm surges, and you are from 5 p to 11 feet, along the east -- anywhere from 5 feet to 11 feet, along the east coast could be possible. the president said to be clear, do not shrugged this off. yetter to be safe than storr is the model of the day. so they will put the election on the back seat for the moment. mitt romney has also canceled his events for the day as people
